One year to the day from his intial signing with Indy Eleven on Jan. 12, 2016, the club announced the return of defender Lovel Palmer to the "Boys in Blue" for a second season in 2017.

The Jamaican international and MLS veteran saw time mostly at right back during his first NASL season with Indy Eleven in 2016, but also showed glimpses of his versatility with a few solid starts at center back as well. In all, the hard-nosed, 32-year-old defender made appearances in 25 of the team's 32 regular season contests (20 starts) and registered one assist along the way, an inch-perfect cross on Justin Braun's 88th minute tally at Fort Lauderdale on Sept. 10.

During his two seasons with MLS' Chicago Fire SC from 2014-15, Palmer recorded 52 appearances while scoring one goal. In the most recent 2015 campaign, he started in 20 of his 22 league matches and tallied one assist, setting up a game-winner against the New England Revolution in October. In total, the veteran racked up 1,797 minutes in MLS play for the Men in Red last season. Furthermore, in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup action Palmer netted the game-winner against the Charlotte Independence in a 3-1 Round of 16 victory at the end of June.

During his earlier four seasons in MLS from 2010-13, Palmer added three goals in 96 appearances across the board for the Houston Dynamo, Portland Timbers, and Real Salt Lake, before being dealt to the Fire for allocation money prior to the start of the 2014 run. Additionally, he got a taste of his first silverware as a member of the RSL team that claimed the MLS Western Conference Championship in 2013.

Prior to his move to the American game, the native of Mandeville, Jamaica, grew up in the sport domestically and began his pro career with eight years in the Jamaican Red Stripe Premier League for traditional power Harbour View. Primarily a midfielder for the “Easters,” Palmer was a huge success, scoring 41 goals in nearly league 150 appearances upon making his debut as a pro at the age of 19 in 2003.

In 2004, he left briefly to join Trinidad & Tobago Pro League club W. Connection on loan, but would come back to Jamaica after finding the back of the net twice in 11 games. Upon returning to Harbour View, Palmer assumed the role of club captain and would keep that role until leaving for MLS and the Dynamo in 2010.

Palmer earned plenty of accolades with Harbour View as a three-time winner of the Jamaican National Premier League, a two-time winner of the Jamaican Domestic Cup and a two-time winner of the CFU Club Championship, an international competition involving clubs in the Caribbean Islands that are members of the Caribbean Football Union. He also gained experience in international competitions during three stints in CONCACAF Champions Cup and League play.

Before turning professional, Palmer developed in the youth systems of both Harbour View and Essex Valley FC, where he began his playing days from 1995-98.

Internationally, the new Boy in Blue sported the Green & Yellow for the Jamaican national team, where he was a member of U-17, U-20, and U-23 national teams before breaking into the senior team in 2005. Since that time, he has appeared in 29 matches for the Reggae Boyz, including all six appearances in the semifinal round of CONCACAF region qualifying for th 2014 World Cup in the latter half of 2012.

Palmer upon his signing with Indy Eleven in Jan. 2016: “When Tim [Hankinson] called me and said he was taking over at Indy Eleven I couldn’t say no because Tim is someone who I can relate to since he’s coached in Jamaica before and he knows the Jamaican players. After we spoke and he talked about his plans for soccer in this city and his plans with this team, it was really a no-brainer. There was a team in MLS that called and wanted me to train with them in their preseason, but after learning what Tim and this team had to offer I wanted to be a part of it. I’m really excited to join the Indy Eleven family now.”

Former Indy Eleven GM Peter Wilt (Jan. '16): “Lovel Palmer is the first of several upcoming signings that will bolster the Indy Eleven roster with experience, character and winning pedigree. His character on and off the field will be beneficial to the organization in many ways in 2016.”

Indy Eleven head coach Tim Hankinson (Jan. '16): “Lovel is a great professional that has represented his country at all levels over 40 times. With a track record of his starts in Major League Soccer we get a polished professional that can play a multitude of positions from right back to central midfield.”
