Getting closer…

Sunday marks the fifth game in a three week span that the “Boys in Blue” have taken to the pitch after a now spending just a little over a month together. Furthermore, Sunday’s match will also be the second in a two day time span.

On Saturday afternoon, Indy Eleven squared up against traveling developmental team Bridges FC where both sides finished 0-0 after 90 minutes. Saturday’s draw now brings Indy to a 2W-1D-1L record, converting the XI’s two-game win streak into a three-game undefeated streak.

Later Saturday evening, Chicago Fire take on MLS’ Sporting Kansas City for the Fire’s 2018 Season Home Opener. It’s likely that both Indy Eleven and Chicago Fire will see drastically different lineups Sunday morning given that each team will look to rest players that racked up minutes the day before.

Chicago is no stranger to Indy Eleven. The Fire hosted Indy Eleven once before in 2016 for the 4th round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The evening’s match ended 0-0 during regular time, which forced both sides to play an additional 30 minutes. During the added time window, Indy forward Justin Braun fired one past Chicago’s keeper for the first of the evening in the 105th minute. Unfortunately, the Fire were quick to respond with the equalizer and forcing the match into penalty kicks. The night ended in a 4-3 win Chicago’s favor, knocking Indy out of the running for Open Cup silverware.

Chicago Fire closed out its 2017 campaign in 3rd place in the Eastern Conference, logging a 16W-7D-11L record. Additionally, Chicago Fire forward Nemanja Nikolic was awarded the Golden Boot honor after scoring a league high 24 goals in the regular season. Nikolic continued to demonstrate his goal scoring ability during the final match of the Fire’s 2018 preseason, tallying one of the two goals in the 2-1 win over USL’s Tulsa Roughnecks FC.

Win, lose or draw, Indy Eleven head coach Martin Rennie continues to focus on making sure his roster is ready for season ahead. “All we’re trying to do this weekend is get as many players as possible up to 90 minutes of fitness,” said Rennie. “We’re preparing for the season, and this will be a good test against good players.”
