Jacksonville, Fla. – Indy Eleven scored off a free kick in the 92nd minute to earn a 1-0 road victory at USL Championship Eastern Conference opponent Sporting JAX on Saturday night.
Loïc Mesanvi created the set piece opportunity by earning a free kick left of the 18. Cam Lindley delivered an exquisite ball past the far post that Paco Craig headed down off the shoulder of defender Antonio Gomez into the upper 90 for the game’s only goal and three points for the Boys in Blue. Lindley matched his jersey number with a game-high six chances created to increase his season total to 31 in 18 matches.
It was another record-setting night for Indy Eleven goalkeeper Eric Dick, who recorded his third clean sheet of the season and the 35th of his USL Championship career to become the 14th player in league history to reach that plateau. The Carmel native and Butler product made two stops in the match to reach 300 saves in his USL-C career, making him the 19th player to achieve that.
Dick earned his third “Save of the Week” nomination on Tuesday and he has a chance to get another one after stopping a breakaway from Jean Mota in the 32nd minute. Mota received a long pass behind the defense and fired a left-footed blast from outside the area. Dick came off his line to lessen the angle and made a two-handed deflection that pushed the ball wide of the post.
The Boys in Blue had their best first-half scoring chance in the 39th minute when Alejandro Mitrano earned a free kick. Lindley delivered another impressive cross from the left edge of the pitch into the six where Anthony Herbert headed it under the crossbar, but Sporting JAX keeper Jake McGuire punched it over the top.
The win moves Indy Eleven up two places into sixth in the 13-team Eastern Conference. The top eight teams in the East at the end of the regular season on October 24 advance to the USL Championship playoffs.
