Hoosiers Down Indy Eleven 2-1 in 9-v-9 Scrimmage
Ex-Hoosier Dylan Mares Bags Goal for "Boys in Blue"
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — A 49th minute goal from Indiana University product Dylan Mares pulled Indy Eleven level against the Hoosiers, but the “Boys in Blue†ultimately fell 2-1 to IU in a 9-v-9 scrimmage played in three, 30-minute segments within the tight confines of John Mellencamp Pavilion Friday night.  The scrimmage was conducted as part of the annual Coaches Symposium held on the IU campus.
“We came in looking at this as a fitness exercise,†said Indy Eleven head coach Juergen Sommer. “We’re trying to push the threshold through these games, to raise the level up to 45 minutes and then continue pushing next week when we play St. Louis. We’ll use the rest of preseason to blend everyone together and create a culture of familiarity in this team.â€
Looking to play a more possession-based game, Indy Eleven worked well to spread the ball around through the first frame but did face a challenge early with IU’s high pressing attack.
In the seventh minute, center back Erick Norales played a seemingly easy ball back that an IU attacker quickly ran on to, but Zionsville product Cory Miller came through to clear the ball out of danger.
Indiana threatened again just before the half hour mark when Tanner Thompson found space on the left and unleashed a low blast that deflected and trailed past Kristian Nicht’s goal for a corner kick.
The dead ball opportunity came to nothing and the first 30-minute period ended with the teams locked 0-0.
Eight minutes into the second frame, the Hoosiers earned a free kick just outside the Indy Eleven penalty area. This time, Thompson took his chance well, curling his effort around the wall and inside the right post to give the hosts a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute.
The visitors made their first serious threat on goal five minutes later when a long-range, diagonal ball from Jaime Frias on the left picked out Wojciech Wojcik, who headed just over the bar.
Sommer swapped out nearly his entire compliment of nine players at the 45-minute mark and it wouldn’t take long for it to make an impact.
In his return to IU, second-year Indy Eleven midfielder Dylan Mares picked up a loose ball, took a touch and unleashed a blast from 25 yards out that tucked inside the left post to equalize in the 49th minute.
The Hoosiers would regain the lead in the 64th minute when a pinpoint, near post corner from Thompson on the left picked out Derek Creviston, whose flick-on header found its way inside the top right corner.
Indy Eleven put the Hoosiers back under pressure in the 75th minute when Dragan Stojkov beat his man to the endline on the right before seeing his cross turned out for a corner kick. On the ensuing corner, Mares found center back Greg Janicki streaking through the box, but the veteran defender nodded his effort just over the bar.
Five minutes later, guest player Tyler Engel found space on the left for Indy Eleven and crossed for Don Smart at the top right of the box, but the Jamaican midfielder powered his effort over the goal.
Engel provided more danger moments later when he received a square ball, turned and blasted his effort straight at IU goalkeeper Michael Sunderland in the 84th minute.
IU nearly added a goal on the break a minute later when midfielder Brad Shaw’s powerful effort was touched over the bar by Eleven ‘keeper Jon Dawson. The ensuing corner kick picked out Shaw at the back post, but his side-winding kick went high.
One last Indy Eleven effort came in the 89th minute when Stojkov’s effort from the top of the box was parried by Sunderland. Suiting up as a guest player, assistant coach Tim Regan was there on the door step, but saw his follow-up effort turned away just before the referee blew the final whistle.
