Indy Eleven Defeats Saint Louis FC 2-0 in Preseason Action
“Indiana’s Team†Gets Second Half Goals from Dylan Mares & Trialist Duke Lacroix to Post Victory over USL Side
FENTON, MO (Wednesday, March 11, 2015) – Indy Eleven used second half goals by trialist forward Duke Lacroix and returning midfielder Dylan Mares to post a 2-0 victory over USL side Saint Louis FC in a preseason match this afternoon at Saint Louis Soccer Park.
As opposed to last Friday’s 9-v-9 scrimmage against Indiana University contested in three 30-minute periods, today’s exercise was played under traditional guidelines – save for free substitutions – under sunny skies in suburban St. Louis. The 90-minute affair allowed Indy Eleven head coach Juergen Sommer the best chance yet to gauge where his squad stands with three-and-a-half weeks to go until its April 4th NASL Spring Season opener at the Atlanta Silverbacks.
“The result is nice, but it’s really just a byproduct of the effort staying high throughout the full 90 minutes today, and that’s what we’re most pleased about,†said Sommer.  “And that’s what we need to get out of these games, seeing the guys push harder and get sharper as the spring goes on, and today was a good sign of progress on those fronts.â€
Indy Eleven would control the proceedings in the first 10 minutes, creating a good early chance through midfielder Victor Pineda, whose low-angle shot from the right endline in the 3rd minute was saved at the near post. Saint Louis FC would see more of the ball in the middle of the half, with ex-Eleven performer Mike Ambersley nearly flicking home a header off a free kick he created in the 19th minute, only to see Indy goalkeeper Kristian Nicht save the attempt on goal.Â
Indy Eleven was forced to make a change midway through the half when left back Jaime Frias emerged from an aerial 50-50 challenge woozy after contact to his head. He would be replaced by Kyle Hyland just before the half hour mark. The five minutes that followed would see Indy Eleven nearly move the scoreboard multiple times, but Mares’ freekick from 25 yards would flash just wide left, midfielder Dragan Stojkov’s shot from the left side of the area was pushed over for a corner and Pineda would see another effort saved before his cross for forward Wojciech Wojcik on the doorstep was left wanting.
Saint Louis would nearly get one against the run of play before the end of the half, but Nicht did well to cut off former Indiana Hoosier Nakita Kotlov’s angle on a breakaway attempt in the 42nd minute, eventually blocking a shot from 15 yards out off the attacker’s foot to keep things scoreless heading into halftime.
The second half would see Saint Louis fire out of the gates in the first 10 minutes, but Indy Eleven guest goalkeeper Jon Dawson held his own, stopping a 1-v-1 chance off an Eleven turnover in the final third four minutes into the stanza before diving low to his left to stop a chance from 12 yards directly in front of goal in the 56th minute.
The chances would even out over the next 20 minutes, with Stojkov’s side-winding effort from 12 yards out in the 59th minute marking the most clear cut chance for either side during that stretch. A minute later Indy Eleven would get its first look of the spring at midfielder Sergio Pena, who arrived back in Indiana from his native Honduras over the weekend.
The scoreboard would finally move in the 76th minute on a great individual effort by the trialist Lacroix, who received the ball on the right flank, achieved space on the endline and carried into the area before finishing inside the far left post to make it 1-0 to the visitors.
Seven minutes from full time it was Mares scoring for the second time in as many preseason games, his first-time shot with the outside of his right foot at the top of the area nestling into the top left side of goal to double the Eleven advantage and close out the scoring at 2-0.
Indy Eleven will continue its preseason schedule this Sunday, March 15, when it welcomes the University of Dayton to the Circle City for a closed-door scrimmage. Due to facility restrictions, Indy Eleven’s preseason games will be closed to the public, however, fans will be able to follow game action throughout the spring live via the team’s @IndyElevenLive Twitter feed.
Media members looking for details on the location and timing of Sunday’s exhibition are asked to contact the Indy Eleven Communications Department via email at media@https://www.indyeleven.com for more information.
Just 24 days remain until Indy Eleven’s 2015 NASL Spring Season opener in Atlanta on April 4, followed a week later by the team’s home opener at Carroll Stadium on Saturday, April 11, against the New York Cosmos, featuring the NASL debut of legendary Spanish striker Raul.  Limited amounts of full season and partial season ticket packages remain, while single game tickets are also now available, starting at just $10.  For full ticket information, visit www.www.indyeleven.com/tickets or call 317-685-1100.
