Indy Eleven's Last Time Out – Indy Eleven 1 : 0 Ottawa Fury FC
Indiana's Team secured another crucial three points to keep their winning streak alive at "The Mike" in 2016 thanks to a last-gasp winner from midfielder Don Smart.
The match, which was a back-and-forth encounter in the first half, saw just four combined shots attempted by the two sides, three of which were blocked, though Fury FC striker Thomas Stewart test Eleven 'keeper Jon Busch early with an effort outside the area just three minutes in.
Scoreless at the break, Fury FC tried again to break the deadlock just under the hour mark, but a distance effort from Ryan Williams was again easily saved by Busch. Brad Ring and Souleymane Youla both had chances to finish one off in the second off, with the former seeing an absolute rocket headed for the upper 90 instead deflected out for a corner.
In the second minute of stoppage time, Don Smart was on the back end of a beautiful curling pass by Dylan Mares to give Indy a 1-0 advantage, a lead they would hold for the final two minutes to put the game to bed. The win keeps the "Boys in Blue" top the table again, with FC Edmonton nipping at their heels.
Rayo OKC's Last Time Out – New York Cosmos 1 : 1 Rayo OKC
New Rayo OKC head coach Gerard Nus earned an impressive result in his first match in charge of the midwest club, grinding out a 1-1 draw in New York against the Cosmos to halt their extensive home win streak.
A fourth-minute strike from Greek international Georgios Samaras put the visiting side ahead early after winger Billy Forbes put a commanding ball into the box that Samaras made no mistake with. However, a few minutes before the end of the half, OKC conceded a penalty that Cosmos midfielder Adam Moffat converted to make it square at one-all.
The second half was full of chances for New York as they outshot their opponents 7-3, but on target only 2-1. Forbes was again at the heart of the action just before the hour mark testing Cosmos 'keeper Jimmy Maurer, and efforts from Cosmos midfielder Juan Arrango and forward Jairo Arrieta forced saves from OKC's Daniel Fernandes, but neither were able to break the deadlock and Rayo earned a valuable point on the road.
TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SIDES… (AGAIN)
Indy's second road test of the Spring Season was the last match of April at Miller Stadium against Rayo OKC. With both sides still working towards cohesiveness, it was Eleven left-back Nemanja Vukovic's 77th minute goal that ended up separating the two sides after Jair Reinoso's opener was canceled out by OKC midfielder Michel's free-kick finish.
Now under new leadership, Rayo come to Indianapolis after responding well to the Spaniard Nus's tactics last weekend but are still to gel 100%, while head coach Tim Hankinson's side have been rolling for last two weeks, defeating their last two opponents 6-2 on aggregate.
INDY ELEVEN PLAYER TO WATCH: FW EAMON ZAYED
Zayed has been an absolute monster at "The Mike" since joining Indy in the offseason, scoring 10 of his 11 goals at home, including five in the Fall Season alone. However, with usual strike partner Justin Braun still working towards full fitness, the question of who will be alongside him still remains unanswered.
Braun is getting closer to action but may not feature for this weekend, leaving Souleymane Youla to vill the same void he did last weekend against Ottawa Fury FC. The Guinean forward performed well after exciting for winger Omar Gordon in the second half, and may be up for selection once more against OKC.
RAYO OKC PLAYER TO WATCH: MF BILLY FORBES
Billy Forbes has torn Indy up in past meetings and is on a run of his own notching a goal and an assist in two of his last three matches.
Using his pace, Forbes has the ability to get around the midfield and exploit the fullbacks, something both Nemanja Vukovic and Marco Franco/Lovel Palmer will have to be weary of with their natural inclination to push forward. The winger is a consistent threat on goal, but also has a knack for playing dangerous balls into the area for his forward to latch onto.
The challenge for Colin Falvey and Greg Janicki (assuming they get the start) will be to hold their line and rotate to neutralize the threat of Forbes while keeping one eye on the forwards that Nus employs Saturday evening.
MATCHUP TO MARK: GK JON BUSCH VS. FW ROBBIE FINDLEY
Jon Busch has conceded just two goals in his last three outings and faces an OKC team that has scored four goals in their last three matches. Perhaps his biggest test pending the selection of Samaras or Sandoval will be forward Robbie Findley, who has converted three chances in his 15 appearances.
Findley had just one shot against the Cosmos last weekend, but completed an impressive 25/29 passes while creating two chances in the match. As "Buschy" keeps his post in goal for the third straight game at Carroll Stadium, keeping his defense organized and limiting chances from a deceptively attacking side will be his task.
