INDIANAPOLIS (May 6, 2017) – In a rematch of the 2016 Championship Semifinal, Indy again dueled with FC Edmonton only to play out a scoreless draw in their first return trip to Michael A. Carroll Stadium.
Injecting a bit of youth into the lineup, Tanner Thompson made his return to the starting XI, while defender Lovel Palmer covered at right back in place of the injured Marco Franco. A physical encounter from the first whistle, Indy and Edmonton traded set pieces in the opening minutes but neither side could capitalize. In the 15th minute, Tanner Thompson nearly ended up on the scoresheet directly from a corner kick, but at the last second, Edmonton ‘keeper Conor Konopka got a fingertip to it to send it over the crossbar and out. The closest the visitors came in the opening half was on miscommunication between Palmer and goalkeeper Jon Busch, but the result was as advantageous as a throw-in. Indy would come close once more before the end of the half on a Tanner Thompson corner, but as Falvey played it to Braun with his head, the forward could only nod over the bar.
In the second half, tempo slowly but surely picked up. Indy continued to press the FC Edmonton goal and earned a number of set pieces near the area. Right on the hour mark, Edmonton ‘keeper Konopka was forced into action on a deflected shot by Braun. As the forward drove the ball towards goal, a wicked redirect nearly saw Konopka beaten over the top of his goal, but he mentioned to just tip it over and prevent the opener. A few minutes later, the closest Eamon Zayed would come to adding another goal to his 2017 tally was on a flashed shot that tested Konopka at his near post but couldn’t find the frame.
In the 74th minute, Indy ‘netminder Jon Busch made an incredible save to keep the score level on the best chance of the night for Edmonton. Driving from right to a central position, substitute midfielder Sabri Khattab got past defender Daniel Keller and in front of defender Colin Falvey, but as he curled a well-struck effort with his left foot, “Buschy” dove with a strong hand to prevent the goal.
In the second straight scoreless draw at “The Mike,” Indy Eleven extended their home unbeaten streak to 21 straight games dating back to October 2015.
Indiana’s Team returns home to IUPUI’s Michael A. Carroll Stadium to host Miami FC on Saturday, May 20 at 7:30 P.M. ET.
