INDIANAPOLIS (August 5, 2017) – In the second of two matches against FC Edmonton in the Fall, Indy Eleven fell 3-1 to the visiting side despite a spectacular free kick goal from defender Nemanja Vukovic.
Edmonton enjoyed the early opportunities of the match, the first of which came inside the opening five minutes. Eddies defender Abdoulaye Diakite was able to direct a header near goal before teammate Tomi Ameobi produced an acrobatic flick at the ball only to see his shot rise narrowly over the bar. Seven minutes later, Edmonton came close again as Fordyce took a pass from Ameobi, but in settling his touch he fired right at goalkeeper Indy ‘netminder Jon Busch.
However, inside the same minute Indy midfielder Don Smart sprinted down the flank on the counter and was able to force a good save from Farago despite nearly losing his balance. Still pressing, another chance for the hosts came just fifteen minutes later for forward Eamon Zayed. Breaking just wide of the box, forward David Goldsmith took a touch towards goal that was nicked off a defender into the path of Zayed. The Irishman then took the effort off the bounce and watched as his curler dipped and clipped the top of the bar.
The final quality chances of the first half for both sides came as Edmonton’s Ben Fisk, who caused problems all night, rifled off the post into the path of Daryl Fordyce, whose shot was blocked by Falvey. Meanwhile, for Indy, defender Nemanja Vukovic stepped up to take a free kick just over 20 yards away from goal but saw his swerving effort ripple on the top of the net for a goal kick.
The second half was truly the tell of the tale for both sides as all four goals plus five yellow cards occurred in the final 45 minutes. The opening chance of the half came as Edmonton’s Fisk got a cross into the box that took a pair of deflections off Indy defender Marco Franco and Eddies teammate Daryl Fordyce before Busch was able to corral the loose ball.
However, in the 51st minute, FC Edmonton was awarded a penalty as Indy’s Marco Franco was whistled for bringing down Edmonton right back Pedro Galvao in the box. In the 53rd minute, Edmonton attacker Dustin Corea stepped up to convert from the spot and open the scoring. Six minutes later, Edmonton tallied their second of the night off a corner from Ben Fisk. Swinging in a cross from his right foot, Fisk planted one near both Diakite and defender Albert Watson. While Watson was judged to have gotten the last touch, the ball narrowly crossed the line as “Buschy” scrambled to keep out the effort only to see the side official rule a goal.
Not to be deterred, Indy would command plenty of the ball in the ten minutes to follow and, in the 66th minute, earned a free kick for “Vuko” to step to once again. From just over 20 yards out, the Montenegrin left back ripped a shot over the wall and past Eddies ‘keeper Tyson Farago to pull one back. However, as Indy pressed higher in attempts to equalize, Edmonton would get their third goal of the night again through Dustin Corea. As Daryl Fordyce raced down the left side on the counter attack, he would roll in a ball directly into the path of Corea who had nothing more than a tap-in to finish the move and give Edmonton a two-goal lead.
The final chances of the match fell for Indy inside the final eight minutes. Midfielder Brad Ring would see a shot skew just wide from well outside the area, while Nemanja Vukovic saw a third free kick clip the bar from 28 yards out and fail to fully hit the target.
“They outworked us and outplayed us, and they wanted it more than we did tonight so it’s a big disappointment that at home we didn’t show greater heart,” said Hankinson. “That’s the story of the game, they wanted it more.”
