INDIANAPOLIS (August 26, 2017) – Indy Eleven fell to the Jacksonville Armada FC after clawing their way back from a 3-0 deficit to nearly secure a point at home.
Opening up the match with defender Nemanja Vukovic (ankle) and forward Justin Braun (ankle) in the starting XI, Indy deployed a never-before-seen combination of personnel that saw Eamon Zayed lead the line with David Goldsmith. The first of a few chances came Indy’s way in the 13th minute when Goldsmith found his strike partner Zayed in the box. The Irishman took the pass and hit an effort on the one-time only for Armada FC ‘keeper Caleb Patterson-Sewell to equal the effort and see the follow-up fly over the bar.
Though Zayed and Goldsmith played well off each other, Jacksonville took the lead just before the half hour mark as midfielder Jack Blake headed home a cross from defender Bryam Rebellon. As the Indy defense was tested by bursts of the Armada FC attack, the visitors won a pair of free kicks in advantageous positions. In the 40th minute, Jacksonville’s Blake made Indy pay for one of those opportunities, burying a close-range effort that goalkeeper Jon Busch had no chance at.
Indy Eleven went into the half trailing Jacksonville, 2-0.
Pressure mounted on Indy’s goal throughout the second half with “Buschy” producing a pair of key saves to keep the deficit at two. However, gifting another free kick to Armada FC, it was again the midfielder Blake who found his way on the scoresheet, scoring a second free kick from similar range to go three-up.
Indy’s momentum would not die, though, and just four minutes later the “Boys in Blue” got on the board through midfielder Ben Speas. Substitute forward Justin Braun was almost an instant impact for his side, rolling a pass through to Speas who made no mistake beating Patterson-Sewell from point-blank range.
The tide took a slight turn in the 75th minute, though, when the forward Braun went to ground with an injury and had to be stretchered off, leaving Indy to finish the match with ten men after using all three of their substitutes. Heading into stoppage time, Ben Speas made things happen once again, this time whipping in an early cross for the forward Goldsmith to latch onto. The Butler product stretched to meet the cross and beat the ‘keeper, leaving a little time for Indy to claw back. However, Jacksonville would see the match through and take three points from Carroll Stadium.
