GRINDING OUT A RESULT
Bouncing back with a win midweek over North Carolina FC, Indy Eleven heads to the home of FC Edmonton on Sunday for the second time in the Fall Season.
Last time at Clarke Stadium, Indy Eleven was spurred on to a victory thanks to goals from David Goldsmith and Eamon Zayed, taking home all three points in a 2-1 win. But “Indiana’s Team” has a new look and still recovering on the injury front. Facing an FC Edmonton side that just saw a four-game unbeaten run snapped by NCFC last Sunday, Indy Eleven will look to seal a similar fate for the hosts this time around.
REWIND vs NORTH CAROLINA FC
The “Boys in Blue” got back to winning ways with a midweek win over North Carolina FC thanks to a stoppage-time goal from forward Eamon Zayed.
Despite both sides creating enough to open the scoring in the first half, the turning of the tide in favor of “Indiana’s Team” came in the 41st minute when NCFC midfielder James Marcelin was shown a straight red card for an apparent elbow on midfielder Sinisa Ubiparipovic.
NCFC put in a solid shift playing a man down and thought they had earned a point away from home only for their hearts to break on an Eamon Zayed goal into added time. With defender Marco Franco whipping in a ball from the right flank, Zayed pounced on the pass with a perfectly weighted header that found the top corner to secure three points for his side.
WHO TO WATCH INDY ELEVEN EDITION: FW PAULO JUNIOR
Earning his first start in an Indy Eleven uniform against North Carolina FC, there was plenty to enjoy about Paulo Junior's NASL debut as a member of the "Boys in Blue."
The sprightly attacker played a mix of winger and inside forward as Indy Eleven deployed just the one man up top in Eamon Zayed. Quick on the ball and in his decision-making, Paulo Junior helped create numerous chances for "Indiana's Team" while drawing the NCFC defense to his side of the pitch. Though unable to produce a goal or assist on the first time asking, the Brazilian has shown that despite limited time training with his new teammates he is still able to find his feet and embed himself in the team's plans.
WHO TO WATCH FC EDMONTON EDITION: FW BEN FISK
FC Edmonton attacker Ben Fisk has been the thorn in Indy Eleven's side during the last few meetings between the two clubs.
Producing one goal and four assists in 20 appearances for the Eddies this year, Fisk's ability to twist and turn around the opposition defense makes him a tough marker. In his last two appearances against Indy, Fisk has registered two assists despite his side only picking up three points (1W-0D-1L) in the Fall Season matches.
MATCH-UP TO MARK: DF CORY MILLER vs FW TOMI AMEOBI
The major match-up to mark comes in the form of Indy defender Cory Miller against Edmonton forward Tomi Ameobi.
Both physical players with a penchant for aerial duels, it will be up to Miller to win the battle in the air and prevent the second ball from falling to the feet of one of Ameobi's teammates. His teammate in defense Colin Falvey is well-versed against a player like Ameobi, but as Miller returns to the ground where his 2016 season was ended due to injury, a lot will be asked of him in helping Indy keep the Eddies off the scoresheet.
