Girls in Blue Cap Undefeated Regular Season with Commanding Win at Carroll
INDIANAPOLIS (Saturday, July 9, 2022) – With last Friday’s 3-0 victory over Detroit City FC, Indy Eleven clinched the Great Lakes Division title – today, a mirror image of that result helped Indiana’s Team capture an undefeated season. Two goals by forward Katie Soderstrom and another from midfielder Addie Chester led the Girls in Blue to a resounding victory and a resulting 10W-0L-2D regular season record after game one of a historic women’s and men’s doubleheader between the two clubs in front of 3,092 fans at IUPUI Michael A. Carroll Stadium.
Forward Maddy Williams came into the match with a team-high 10 goals, and she had an early chance for an eleventh but had her line drive ricochet off of a Detroit defender in the second minute. Chester’s sliding shot in the fourth minute almost put Indy on the scoreboard, but Detroit City goalkeeper Deighton Wamer had the diving save, her first of four in the opening seven minutes.
However, she could only stop the Girls in Blue for so long, as Soderstrom matched Williams with her tenth goal of the year in the 25th minute after collecting a pass from defender Jenna Chatterton that she was able to carry inside area and finish through the legs of Wamer. The Girls in Blue had additional opportunities in the final 10 minutes of the half through Williams and Chatterton, but Wamer was on the spot again to ensure the half ended with Detroit down just 1-0.
Halftime substitute forward Milica Bulatovic had two scoring opportunities inside the area for Indy in the 60th minute, but just after her second effort was blocked Chester collected abd slipped a shot through three Detroit City defenders inside the six to score the Eleven’s second. The celebration carried on two minutes later as Soderstrom’s penalty shot, created when Karsyn Cherry was tackled down inside the area, went inside the right post, giving her a brace and the team’s solo scoring lead on 11 tallies – and Indiana’s Team a three-nil lead.
Both sides used their full allotment of five subs, largely to get some younger players some added experience in the final contest of the campaign but also to spark energy needed to finish off the final 30 minutes. One of the subs, Emma Johnson, had the opportunity to make it four for Indy Eleven in the 84th minute with a free kick, but the ball was pinballed around the 18 and eventually taken by Detroit. Indiana’s Team saw out the rest of the game to earn the joint clean sheet between starter Mackenzie Wood substitute Kate Phillips, capping off their inaugural regular season in the W League with an undefeated record, a season-high five-game winning streak and a dominant +24 goal diffential in their 12 contests.
Indy Eleven’s W League Playoffs run will kick off with a Quarterfinal Round game this Wednesday, July 13. As of press time, Indy Eleven is uncertain of its opponent and the location of the match. Updates will be posted by Monday on indyeleven.com/wleague and the @IndyEleven social media channels.
