Dambrot Golazo, Second Straight Clean Sheet Help Bring Full Points Back to Indy
KENNESAW, Ga. (Wednesday, September 28, 2022) – Indy Eleven captured its second 1-0 win in four days’ time, this time via a road victory over Atlanta United 2 at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. Defender Robby Dambrot’s breathtaking strike midway through the first half proved enough to bring the full points back north thanks to the fourth shutout for the Boys in Blue and goalkeeper Tim Trilk over a seven-match span across the last month.
With Indy Eleven in the middle of its final three-match week of the season, Head Coach Mark Lowry made seven changes to the squad that captured a 1-0 win over Loudoun United FC just three nights earlier. The squad included the professional debut of USL Academy contract defender and Evansville native Ecris Revolorio, the second start for 18-year-old forward Wilfredo Rivera since joining the club in July, and the honor of the captain’s armband going to Indy’s own Justin Ingram for the first time during the midfielder’s rookie campaign.
The game sprung to life after 10 minutes, with United leading scorer Jackson Conway forcing Trilk into his first save on a shot from distance. Indy striker Wilfredo Rivera upped the pressure on Trilk’s opposite number between the posts, 16-year-old Nash Skogland, soon after with a pair of shots the debutant goalkeeper did well to keep out.
Dambrot indeed moved the scoreboard in the 23rd minute with a spectacular full volley from the top of the area, his left-footed effort slicing away from Skogland and nestling inside the left post to put Indiana’s Team ahead.
Both sides had ample chances to move the scoreboard as halftime approached, with Conway unlucky to push a redirect at the six wide just after the half hour mark. Atlanta’s Tristan Trager was snakebit twice in the minutes that followed, popping up a chance right on the goalline before dragging a 1-v-1 chance against Trilk just left of frame. Ingram created a chance for himself in the 38th minute, winning a tackle at the edge of the final third before firing from 30 yards to put Skogland into action again. Trilk’s point-blank save of a Nicolas Firmino header and Skogland’s stop of Manuel Arteaga’s free kick marked the end of an eventful first half that saw the visitors put seven of their 11 shots on target.
The second half was another back-and-forth 45 minutes, although the sharpness of finishing resulted in no chances on frame – not that there weren’t scares on both sides. Trager’s 25-yard effort in the 49th minute put Trilk on notice, and Rivera was again active just before the hour mark, first with a dangerous service into the six before he created legitimate claim for a point to the spot after carrying into the area and getting clipped by Firmino, although no whistle was given.
Atlanta began to ramp up its time in the final third from there, with Toni Tiente and Bryce Washington both just missing the target with headers off corner kicks, while Luke Brennan’s back-post redirect off another crossed service skimmed off the front of the crossbar and stayed out in the 78th minute.
Eleven substitutes Ayoze and Solomon Asante gave the Eleven one more solid look via a field-length 2-v-1 counterattack in the 82nd minute, but Skogland’s aggressive sliding tackle at the top of his area thwarted the chance. Two minutes later the last decent chance of the night to equalize came off the head of Firmino, but the darting shot fell just wide for ATL UTD 2, allowing Indy to snap an eight-game road winless streak that began after a 4-3 win at Charleston Battery on June 4.
Indiana’s Team returns home this Saturday, Oct. 1, when it hosts FC Tulsa for a 7:00 p.m. kick at Carroll Stadium presented by Community Health Network.
