Eleven Wins Big In Season Opener
ST. PETERS, Mo. (Wednesday, May 10, 2023) – Indy Eleven scored a club-record eight goals on the way to an 8-0 shutout win over St. Charles FC to open the 2023 USL W League season.
The Girls in Blue dominated much of the attack during the first 45, scoring a pair of goals to take the lead into half. Sam Dewey got the scoring started in the 16th minute after intercepting a pass in St. Charles’ defensive third and connecting on a shot from the top of the 18. Just five minutes later Olivia Simmons found herself with a chance off a header inside the box, the opportunity was deflected off the goal line in the direction of Maisie Whitsett who found the back of the net on a header of her own.
The second half saw Sam Dewey get things started again in the 52nd minute off an assist from Whitsett. Whitsett would capitalize on a second of her own off an Addie Chester assist in the 70th minute.
Four more players notched their first tally of the season with Katie Soderstrom (Leonard), Hal Hershfelt, Maria Vanegas and Allie Leonard adding to the Indy total.
Emily Edwards earned the clean sheet in goal.
The Eleven previously tallied a club record for goals in the 6-1 victory over Flint City FC on May 12, 2022 and have eight performances of three-plus goals since the start of the inaugural USL W League season in 2022.
The Girls in Blue are on the road for the remainder of May, with matches at Lexington SC (May 21) and Kings Hammer FC (May 24). The home opener is set for Friday, June 2 at 7 p.m. against Racing Louisville FC. Ticket information can be found here. The match is one of five at home for Indy this season.
The Eleven went 10-0-2 in its inaugural season in 2022, opening the year with three straight wins.
