Boys in Blue clinch USL Championship Playoff berth with victory
INDIANAPOLIS (Saturday, September 30, 2023) – Indy Eleven scored three goals at The Mike to defeat Detroit City FC 3-0, and clinched a USL Championship Playoff spot. This will be the third appearance in the USL Championship Playoffs and the first since 2019 for the Boys in Blue.
Indy Eleven now sits at 12-11-9, and Detroit City falls to 10-15-7.
Indy started the match on the attack in the opening 25 minutes creating three shots on target and hitting the woodwork twice, while holding 65.4% of the possession. Douglas Martinez scored the opener, tallying his fourth goal of the season in the 45th minute.
The Boys in Blue headed into halftime leading 1-0 with eight shots and six shots on target, while Detroit had one shot and none on target.
In the 69th minute, Cam Lindley assisted Sebastian Velasquez’s goal which nestled in the top left corner to put Indy up 2-0. This was the first goal for Velasquez in an Indy Eleven uniform. Meanwhile, Lindley moved to five assists on the season.
Cementing the win, Stefano Pinho played a ball across the face of goal where Roberto Molina scored his third goal on the season in the 93′ minute to put Indy up 3-0. Pinho recorded his first assist this season. The goal marked Indy’s 10th goal from a substitute, the second most in the USL Championship this season.
Next up, The Boys in Blue will travel to FC Tulsa on Saturday, October 7, 2023. Kickoff is primed for 8:30 p.m. ET.
