Indianapolis – The Indy Eleven offense generated 17 shots (13 inside the box, seven shots on target), seven corners won, 17 fouls won, and 1.73 Expected Goals, but Oakland Roots SC goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh made five saves to lead his team to a 1-0 win at Carroll Stadium. It is the first loss for the Boys in Blue this month and just the second since August 1.
In the sixth minute Cam Lindley started a scoring chance at midfield with an interception and a left-footed ball to the right side to Bruno Rendon. The Boys in Blue forward made a great run and played a cross to Jack Blake near the penalty spot, but his shot was blocked. Defender Joe Hafferty got the rebound, took a quick touch, and fired a laser toward the upper 90, but it was saved.
Defender Alejandro Mitrano started another opportunity in the 27th minute with a steal at midfield. After an Indy Eleven buildup, Mitrano played a cross to Edward Kizza inside the 18 and he played a quick touch to Josh O’Brien for a shot.
Captain Aodhan Quinn, in his 100th start for the Boys in Blue in all competitions, played a free kick in the 43rd minute that McIntosh punched out. Blake got the rebound and quickly shot toward the far post, but it was deflected wide.
In the final minute of first half stoppage, Quinn took a free kick from a dangerous spot and shot in between two walls of Oakland players, but McIntosh again made a diving save.
Indy Eleven continued its attack at the start of the second half in the 47th minute when Kizza uncorked a one-touch shot just under the crossbar that was punched away by McIntosh.
After Oakland took the lead, the Boys in Blue responded immediately with Blake winning a 50/50 ball and playing it inside the 18 to O’Brien, who took a touch to his right to create space and fired it to the upper 90 near post, but McIntosh punched it over the bar.
In the 73rd, center back Anthony Herbert won an aerial duel inside the 18 and headed it to Malik Henry-Scott at the edge of the six and he blasted it on target, but McIntosh again parried it away.
Indy Eleven produced another buildup in the 89th minute with Mohamed Omar running into space and playing a diagonal ball to Loïc Mesanvi just outside the box left side. He played a quick ball to Henry-Scott who took a dribble and touched it out to Omar who curled a shot just over the crossbar.
The three-game Boys in Blue homestand concludes with “Honoring our Heroes Night” recognizing First Responders & Military Saturday at 7 p.m. at The Mike presented by F.A. Wilhelm Construction. Wilhelm will be providing free Military Dog Tags to the first 250 fans. Wilhelm will also have its Pump and Vac trucks, and IMPD and Heartland Ambulance will be bringing vehicles to the Fun Zone. Fans can purchase two tickets online for $25 with a portion going to the American Legion Veterans & Children Foundation.
