Indy Eleven’s run of signings for the 2023 USL Championship campaign continued on Dec. 6, 2022, with the official welcome of German goalkeeper Yannik Oettl to the Boys in Blue.
Oettl will be recognizable to the Eleven faithful as a member of Eastern Conference foe Hartford Athletic, which he joined on loan from MLS Next PRO side New England Revolution II last May. Oettl took over Hartford’s top-choice goalkeeping duties by June and started 19 of their final 21 contests. The German goalkeeper posted four shutouts – including a five-save effort against Las Vegas Lights FC in late September that led to a USLC Team of the Week nod for Week 28 – and made 74 saves, placing tied for the 11th most stops across the 27-team USL Championship last season.
Oettl signed with Revs II in July of 2021 and made six saves across three appearances while competing for the side in its final USL League One campaign. Oettl also played part of the 2021 USL League Two season with the Ocean City Nor’Easters, making seven saves across four appearances.
Oettl turned in a stellar four-year career at the UCF, where he played 58 games, posted a 1.03 GAA, and led the Knights to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances. In each of those three seasons, Oettl was voted the American Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Year. Before going to UCF, the Munich native made 15 professional appearances across Germany’s lower divisions, including 12 matches for FC Augsburg II. He developed in the SpVgg Unterhaching Academy on their U17 and U19 teams.
